Last.fm stops being free, but probably not for you
Last.fm Radio will soon require a monthly subscription fee of €3.00, unless you live in Germany, Britain or the United States.
The company, which was bought up by CBS last year, currently funds their presence in these other territories through advertising. However, times are tough and the ads just aren't generating enough money to keep up with the royalty payments.
The premium model has been available for years, but until now there was always a choice between paying for an ad-free version or having a free version with ads. This option is now being rescinded.
"In the United States, United Kingdom and Germany, nothing will change," posted Last.fm co-founder Richard Jones on Last.fm's blog. "In all other countries, listening to Last.fm Radio will soon require a subscription of €3.00 per month".
Prepare for a sudden emergence of non-english language Last.fm clones in the near future.
